Feature Request: OpenAPI Support for Nanoleaf Essentials & Outdoor Permanent Light Scenes
As a Home Assistant + Matter + Thread user, I’d really like to request expanded OpenAPI support for Nanoleaf Essentials devices, especially:
- Essentials Matter-over-Thread Bulbs
- Essentials Light Strips
- Outdoor Permanent Lights
Right now, these devices expose only generic Matter lighting controls (brightness/color/color temp) to platforms like Home Assistant. The actual Nanoleaf scene engine — which is arguably the best part of the ecosystem — is locked inside the Nanoleaf app.
This creates a frustrating split for advanced smart-home users:
- Home Assistant handles scheduling/automation/orchestration
- Nanoleaf app handles themes/effects
- But there is no clean API bridge between them
What many of us want is:
- ability to enumerate available Nanoleaf scenes/themes
- activate scenes via API
- trigger holiday themes automatically
- integrate scenes into Home Assistant automations
- preserve Nanoleaf’s superior visual effects while still using open smart-home orchestration
For example:
- automatically switch to Halloween themes in October
- Christmas themes in December
- July 4th themes in July
- game/movie/event-triggered scenes
- schedule scenes based on sunset or presence
The current Matter implementation makes Essentials devices behave like generic RGB lights, which loses much of what makes Nanoleaf unique.
Even a simple local REST API endpoint like:
- list scenes
- activate scene
- query current scene
would dramatically improve integration possibilities.
This would make Nanoleaf far more compelling for advanced Home Assistant users compared to alternatives like WLED, which already offers extensive API-driven effect automation.
Please consider exposing the
Nanoleaf scene engine for Essentials and Outdoor Permanent Lights through the OpenAPI.
Thank you for your consideration.

Thank you for taking the time to share such detailed feedback. We can definitely see the value in exposing more of the Nanoleaf scene engine to advanced smart home platforms like Home Assistant, especially for users who rely on Matter and Thread for automation and orchestration. The ability to enumerate available scenes, activate them through an API, query the current scene, and incorporate them into automations would open up many exciting possibilities while preserving the unique lighting experiences that make Nanoleaf products stand out.
For reference, Nanoleaf does currently provide OpenAPI documentation for Matter WiFi Essentials devices here:

We'll be happy to pass this feedback along to the appropriate team for consideration in future enhancements.
